For a season, my family lived in the state of Florida, in the United States, and one of the things we learned and experienced during our time there was being prepared for hurricanes.
I own property in Florida (even though I don’t live there anymore) and so this week I was especially interested in the approaching Hurricane Dorian.
Ahead of the storm, I received a few different brands that reached out to me on email or text, offering tips, perspectives, information etc… about the approaching storm and how to prepare. This communication was different. It wasn’t trying to sell me something, it wasn’t trying to clickbait me, it wasn’t sensational. It was simply brands realizing the severity of a looming storm in my life and reaching out to me. I appreciated that.
This experience gave me pause to think about my role as a digital missionary. In the relationships I have, the people I am helping, the products I am building, am I aware of what’s going on it people’s lives or am I just trying to push my agenda?
Being aware of the circumstances in someone’s life goes a long way in building trust. As missionaries, we go where people are and if there’s a storm let’s journey it together with those we’re reaching out to.
