Indigitous #HACK, returning October represents a generation of Christians in the tech industry passionate about bringing the gospel to where it’s not. Each city will gather locally over a weekend in October, while simultaneously connecting to a global network of Christians from around the world who are also applying their talents to their faith!
The community of Holfontein, is a community located in Trichardt on the N17 Highway in the Mpumalanga Province. The community is an informal settlement with a small population of about 800 people. 80% of the community is found unemployed and because of such high levels of poverty, issues of crime are high in the community, women have went into prostitution to provide for their families, lack of food, teenage pregnancy is high, high rate of dropout learners in school before they reach Matric, quality of education is poor in schools as they lack basic resources like books, stationery, library, proper facilities for school, those who complete matric don’t have funds to further their education in school, basic necessities like water and electricity is not available, toilets to use as the ones they have is very dangerous.
The community is staying in private land since 2006 and the Municipality promised to move them as it can’t provide infrastructure for them as they are on private land. The Municipality’s promise to move them failed as they say they cannot find land for them. The community now opted to stay permanently on the farm and a social covenant document in terms of the community staying permanently was signed by the farmer who own the land, with different members of the community with shared values and agreement.
Businesses and surrounding companies are willing to come and fulfill certain specific needs in the community that each business desires to fulfill.
The problem is that there is no defined information in regards to the community in a form of a document that speak of the needs, the statistics of different age groups and ethnicities, employment status, highest education level, income levels, access to basic infrastructure, crime rates, key economic activities and employment growth. No formal structure has been formed in terms of the forum with key contacts of the community leaders the companies can speak to. No formal letter with a stamp from the Municipality to endorse the existence of this community.
In the past two months we have worked to formalize such information but the CHALLENGE IS FOR COOPERATE COMPANIES AND BUSINESSS TO GET SUCH INFORMATION.
To design a portal with full information of the needs and the challenges of the community, with login details to make it easy for cooperate companies to access. To link surrounding businesses and companies to that portal.
THE DESIRED OUTCOME
The desired outcome is for the portal designed with every company in the Govan Mbeki municipality linked to the portal and see them fulfill those specific needs in the community #Hack challenge for the community of holfontein will require developers, IT specialists, strategic thinkers, planners, social entrepreneurs, designers, photographers, administrators etc. to solve this problem.
#HACK-JESUS FILM REPORTING APP
There is a need to develop a Resource and Ministry Activity App for Smart Devices that can capture basic Jesus Film Ministry Activity for an individual user as well as our partners like other Campus Crusade for Christ teams, churches and mission organisations.
A Real-Time Activity App will advance the current Global Jesus Film Project Digital Missions focus and become a valuable resource to measure our resources and teams’ activities.
There is poor communication with teams using the Jesus Film resources in the field.
We did implemented a basic short WhatsApp / Excel report system to capture team and resource activity in 2018. Although we did collect data with this system it was not properly captured and is currently incomplete. Only about 5% of teams are using the Global Measurement Application(GMA). GMA doesn’t cater for the African context of limited data access and this system will be discontinued by the end of 2020.
THE DESIRED OUTCOME
A basic Ministry Activity App with potential to grow and expand in order for us to be good stewards over those we train and equip and to give accurate feedback about activities, resources and the results.
#HACK- ONLINE PERSONA JOURNEY STRATEGY
A Persona is a character profile tool used to understand and therefore create content for a specific target audience.
To create a campaign to reach a specific persona for Christ. We will use the tools of Social Media, Webpages (short articles) and a themed course.
We have 3 people groups that we want to focus on:
Unaware: People who have not heard of Jesus or have no knowledge of what He has done for us.
Curious: People who are seeking God online but have not been led to the point of making a decision to give their lives to Christ.
Follower: A person who gave his heart to Christ but needs someone to disciple/guide him in his faith.
THE DESIRED OUTCOME:
The goal of this campaign is to get these personas to our KnowingGod platform. Here they can be discipled by an e-coach, get connected to a community, and hopefully become a discipler of the next online seekers.
SKILLS WE NEED ON THE TEAM:
Social media Influencers
People with Marketing expertise
People are online now more than ever. The virtual world has become a vital field where we need to reach people for Christ. The benefit is that Google and other companies are keeping record of what people are looking for, and many are searching about faith and the meaning of life. People are looking for hope.
The internet offers a multitude of quick-fix answers to the questions people are asking about real-life issues. Unfortunately, most of these answers lead to more grief and heartache because the promised relief is short-lived and convenient. A cycle of despair is inevitable, and hope seems elusive.
We as Christians know the source of truth, life and a lasting hope – it’s found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We want to take people from different walks of life on a journey to discover Him – the source of true hope. To do that we need to create local content focused on a specific theme that we can share on social media and webpages. This content is created with the purpose of helping people grow in their understanding of the Christian faith. If you are good at writing, creating images, memes, are knowledgeable on how to help people deal with problems, and/or how to do marketing, we want to challenge you to join this event.
THE DESIRED OUTCOME
We trust that we can move people from being unaware of Christ to being curious about Him to become a follower of Jesus. We want to use social media, websites and a course to help people through this journey.
Hackathons provide a hands-on event for self-expression and creativity for computer programmers, developers, engineers, user experience, project managers and others through technology. People with technical backgrounds come together, form teams around a problem or idea, and collaboratively code a unique solution from scratch — these generally take shape in the form of websites, mobile apps, and robots.
Indigitous #HACK uniquely gathers devoted Christ-followers with a desire to extend God’s purposes in our local cities and connects us around the world. #HACK offers Christians in each host city an opportunity to make new friends and learn from one another while addressing critical issues through digital solutions. #HACK invites people to meet the needs of the church, missions and society on a local and global scale, expanding the Great Commission through new innovative platforms and digital strategies.
Mass collaboration is the ability for large numbers of people, who may have no previous connection, to effectively and creatively work towards a common goal. The greater diversity of skill represented on each team, the higher the team’s capacity to successfully tackle the task at hand. #HACK levels mass collaboration up to a global scale, connecting like-minded believers across every region of the world through expertise and prayer.
To get right to the point… yes! #HACK welcomes anyone who wants to collaborate together on missional technology projects for long-term impact. While our work focuses on multiple technology platforms, you don’t have to be a programmer to get involved. We need designers, photographers, writers, project managers, social media gurus – creative thinkers of all types! The most important skill is the ability to work as a team and find ways to problem-solve. Also, while Indigitous #HACK is explicitly Christian, participants from any (or no) faith background are welcomed warmly.
It depends on the city in which you are participating. Please fill out the #HACK 2020 interest form, and we will gladly connect you to the closest #HACK city.
Our local mentors will be by your side throughout the hackathon online or face-to-face.
